UST Owners & Operators

The Iowa DNR UST Section regulates underground storage tank systems, and their owners and operators. There are numerous regulations regarding the installation, maintenance and operation of UST systems. These regulations are in place to protect our natural resources, and ensure public safety. The DNR’s goal is to provide guidance to owners and operators in order for them to remain in compliance.

Understanding and complying with Iowa UST requirements is critical to protecting our groundwater. Start by reading UST Basics. While it is the role of the DNR to enforce the rules and regulations, the DNR also assists tank owners and operators with compliance issues. The more operators know about an UST system, the better off we all will be in terms of loss prevention, compliance with regulations, public safety, and groundwater protection. Iowa UST Class A/B Operator Training is required and very beneficial for an owner or operator to understand much of what they need to know.

When seeking companies to work on an underground storage tank system, the tank owner should verify which activities a person is certified to conduct before employing their services. For example, a person only certified to conduct an underground tank removal cannot perform a tank installation. Companies and individuals certified to perform petroleum services that require certification in Iowa can be found via the Search page of the UST Professional Certifications database.
