FORT DODGE, Iowa - DNR field staff were investigating a spill for the third day after fertilizer from CJ Bio America entered the South Branch of Lizard Creek on April 14. The spill was confirmed to have been stopped on Monday.
DNR fisheries staff are continuing to assess the impact on aquatic life. Initial test results show that pollutant levels have diminished and that the impact on aquatic life was likely limited to the South Branch and Lizard Creek.
Due to the flow of the river, the pollutant moved quickly downstream, and no impact on drinking water wells or groundwater is expected.
The DNR is working with the facility regarding ongoing clean-up at the site. Additional information and decisions regarding enforcement actions will be available upon the completion of the investigation.
To report a release after hours, please call the DNR’s emergency spill line at (515) 725-8694. Quick reporting can help DNR staff identify the cause of an incident. The DNR website has more information about spill reporting requirements.
