DES MOINES – The DNR received two reports of wastewater discharges this morning. An ongoing wastewater discharge is occurring in the city of Lake City in Calhoun County. A second wastewater discharge in DeWitt, Clinton County, stopped.

DES MOINES — Iowa companies have saved more than $1.6 million dollars in the last year thanks to waste-reducing projects completed by 16 interns from the DNR’s Pollution Prevention (P2) Intern Program. Six of these 16 projects represent the final results of 24-week projects completed at the end of 2015.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources State Parks Bureau is seeking public input on possible changes to the minimum-stay requirements for all state park campgrounds and at the multi-family cabin at Springbrook State Park for the Fourth of July holiday. The public is also being asked for comments regarding the proposed rental fee pricing for a large open-air picnic shelter scheduled to be built and opened in 2017 at Lake Manawa State Park.

Some facilities have been submitting manure management plans (MMPs) signed by the MMP writer rather than the owner. Just a reminder that the plans, including annual updates, must be signed by the facility owner. If the owner is a corporation, the person authorized by law to sign on behalf of the corporation must sign the MMP. The same applies to open feedlots and truck washes that require a nutrient management plan or NMP.

Here’s a reminder for confinement feeding operation producers who must have a manure management plan (MMP): soil tests are required once every four years. The best times to sample soils are in the fall after harvest and before fertilizer or manure is applied, or in the spring before fertilization.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will be aerial spraying for bush honeysuckle on the Mount Ayr, Sand Creek, Dekalb and Red Rock Wildlife Management areas (WMA) in south central Iowa through mid-November.  Spraying will occur after most trees have lost their leaves but while the honeysuckle leaves are still green.

A Denison man suffered a self inflicted gunshot wound to his thigh from a pistol he was carrying in his waistband shortly after he began walking to the field to hunt deer with his muzzleloader.  The injury occurred around 5 p.m. on October 17, in southern Crawford County.

The Natural Resource Commission for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources approved two Resource Enhancement and Protection Public Private Cost-share grant requests from the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation at its October meeting. The projects were awarded more than $510,000.

The Natural Resource Commission of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources approved eight Resource Enhancement and Protection grants to County Conservation Boards during its October meeting. The grants totaled $1.29 million. There were 17 applications for the grants.

The Natural Resource Commission of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources approved Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) grants to 22 cities for use in parks and open spaces during its October meeting.  The projects were awarded nearly $2.4 million.  There were 53 applications for the grants.
