New crayfish harvest regulation on Storm Lake

STORM LAKE, Iowa – To help reduce the spread of rusty crayfish to other waterbodies in Iowa, licensed bait dealers can no longer harvest any crayfish species from Storm Lake. Crayfish collected for bait from Storm Lake for personal use can only be used in Storm Lake and cannot be transported live from the lake.

GRIMES, Iowa – Work to repair and widen the Interstate 35/80 bridge over the Des Moines River will detour trail users of the Neal Smith Trail for their safety on a signed detour until summer 2021, weather permitting, according to the Iowa DOT.

The new registry makes it possible for Iowans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors when obtaining a hunting, fishing or fur harvester license.

Avoiding a fish kill starts with understanding why they happen most often during mid- to late summer. Several factors contribute, but remember fish and aquatic animals like crayfish, frogs and beneficial insects are most vulnerable during hot, dry weather. Usually stream and pond levels are lower, vegetation and algae levels are higher and water temperatures are warmer. These factors combine to reduce dissolved oxygen levels, stressing aquatic animals.

State laws require producers and manure applicators to report spills to the Iowa DNR. Not only is reporting required, but the sooner you report, the more likely DNR technical staff can help. DNR staff have experience with many spills. They may be able to offer ideas that you don’t think of—preventing a worse situation or a fish kill. Play it safe and call it in.

The good news for Iowa’s cottontail rabbit hunters is that Iowa has a strong population of rabbits, similar to last year, with only the east central part of the state seeing a decline in numbers. The better news for hunters is Iowa’s cottontail rabbit season begins Aug. 31 statewide.
