Make an Iowa State Park cabin your Spring Break destination

With spring break quickly approaching, make sure you set your plans now for a getaway in one of Iowa’s state park cabins! While the season isn’t in full bloom yet, don’t let that stop you from enjoying a stay at one of 10 state parks with available spring cabins. The popular trout stream stocking season starts in only five weeks on April 1. This year’s trout stocking calendar, available on the DNR website, features the traditional favorite streams and one new location on Mill Creek in Bellevue.  The Mill Creek stocking site will provide easy-access fishing in Felderman Park next to Bellevue State Park.

Iowa’s 2018 reported spring turkey harvest is approaching 9,300 birds. Last year, hunters reported nearly 11,800 turkeys. Iowa’s spring turkey hunting season ends May 20.

DUBUQUE - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has added White Pine Hollow State Preserve to the areas where it will be conducting prescribed burns this spring. Fire was historically an important part of perpetuating this unique forest ecosystem and area managers will include fire more frequently to properly manage this site.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will be conducting prescribed burns this spring on wildlife management areas managed by the Iowa DNR’s Black Hawk Wildlife Unit in Sac, Pocahontas and Cherokee counties.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ spring fish spawning season is over and Iowa’s two walleye hatcheries are filled to capacity. Netting crews collected enough walleye to produce 1,116 quarts of walleye eggs at the Spirit Lake hatchery and 914 quarts at the Rathbun hatchery.

Spring turkey hunting success and safety comes down to the same thing – proper planning.  Preseason scouting can put hunters in the right position when turkeys come off the roost, increasing their chance for success.

Iowa’s 2017 spring season begins April 8 with an Iowa youth only hunting season that covers two weekends and allows hunters younger than 16 when they buy the turkey license to participate.  The reason for the season is to concentrate on the development of future hunters.  They must hunt one on one with a mentor age 18 or older at all times and the mentor must have a valid turkey hunting license for one of the spring seasons.

DES MOINES – The Iowa DNR will hold the 2017 spring auction on April 22, at Pioneer Livestock Pavilion on the Iowa State Fairgrounds, in Des Moines.  Doors will open at 7 a.m., and the auction will begin at 8:30 a.m.
