The first day of November looked to be a promising day. I had the morning off to go trout fishing and the weather was cooperating. Like most people, I don’t go fishing nearly often enough so I wanted to share my outing with someone. My husband and kids would all be at work. The grandkids were in school or at the sitter’s. As I considered my options, my husband’s uncle came to mind.

In Iowa, confinement site manure applicators — people who haul and land apply manure from a confinement (totally roofed) facility with a capacity of 500 or more animal units (1,250 finishing hogs, 500 beef cattle, etc.) — must be certified or use a certified commercial manure applicator. Commercial applicators (those who are in the business of hauling or applying manure) must also be properly certified.

It contains four years of emissions data from SPARS (2011 – 2014), allows for simpler and streamlined reporting, and also offers the option of importing emissions data via a spreadsheet template, significantly reducing data entry for facilities with a large number of emission processes.

While rain storms are natural, storm water runoff is not. Flowing from rooftops and surging out downspouts, across the yard, into the street and down the storm sewer untreated, rainfall is routed to the nearest stream or lake. Runoff is often polluted. In its rough and tumble downhill journey, rain picks up heavy metals, oils, fertilizers, soils, sediment, and pesticides.
