FAIRBANK, Iowa - Fans in the stands of the Wapsi Valley Warriors football stadium have taken notice of the large birds with long necks and grinding, raspy calls flying overhead during games in recent years. The once rare sight has become more common as the local sandhill crane population at Aldo Leopold Wildlife Management Area continues to expand.

Confinement site applicators attending Pork Congress Jan. 24 can also complete their manure applicator certification training. DNR and Iowa State University Extension will offer the two-hour class from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 103 on the lower level of Hy-Vee Hall at the Iowa Events Center.

Fall is almost here. That means harvest is coming and manure application season is around the corner. Late September marks six months since the online manure management plan (eMMP) application rolled out. In the first four months, producers submitted about 30 percent of annual MMP updates using the new system.

Letters went out from DNR March 22 regarding the new electronic manure management plan (eMMP) application. DNR sent only one letter per facility site providing a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to owners of confinement facilities who must file manure management plans. If you are a co-owner who did not receive a letter, please work with your ownership group.

Coming in March, DNR will have an option for livestock and poultry farmers to submit their annual Manure Management Plan (MMP) updates and pay compliance fees online. The electronic (eMMP) option provides a simplified process for producers, their consultants, counties and the DNR.

Work is proceeding on the new electronic Manure Management Plan (eMMP) which will make it possible to submit short forms for manure management plans and pay fees online. The goal is to simplify filing an annual MMP for 7,000-plus producers, their consultants, and the 99 counties that receive the plans.

Some facilities have been submitting manure management plans (MMPs) signed by the MMP writer rather than the owner. Just a reminder that the plans, including annual updates, must be signed by the facility owner. If the owner is a corporation, the person authorized by law to sign on behalf of the corporation must sign the MMP. The same applies to open feedlots and truck washes that require a nutrient management plan or NMP.
