DES MOINES – A Morning Sun man has pled guilty to multiple counts of illegally taking deer in Louisa County.

Ryan Matthew Greiner, 30, pled guilty to nine counts of illegally taking deer and seven counts of abandonment of dead or injured wildlife. All told, Greiner was ordered to pay $3,120 in fines and $36,000 in liquidated damages for the nine deer, as well as court costs.

Greiner was charged following an Iowa Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement investigation when citizens reported the deer being shot by rifles and left to rot.

“We are very grateful to the people who reported these actions to us and assisted us in making this case,” said DNR Conservation Officer Lucas Dever.

Another man arrested in the case, Treyton Hartman, 19, of Yarmouth, was found guilty of multiple wildlife-related charges earlier this year. The charges were filed earlier this summer based on evidence that was collected during execution of a search warrant at their residences in January.
