DES MOINES – The victim of a horseback riding fatality at Stephens State Forest near Lucas has been identified as 58-year-old Carole Renaud of Lacona.
Renaud was riding with a friend Saturday in Stephens State Forest when the horse she was on lost its footing and fell on her shortly before 2 p.m. She was airlifted to a hospital in Des Moines where she later died. The friend alerted emergency personnel and the Chariton Fire and Rescue and the Lucas County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene.
At the time of the incident, the equestrian trails at Stephens State Forest were closed due to wet conditions.
