The DNR will hold a public meeting Friday, July 15 to tour the Iowa Blood Run site and present the final Iowa Blood Run cultural landscape master plan.

The tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Those interested in attending are asked to please meet by 9:45 a.m. at Granite Mercantile, 1114 125th St. in Larchwood for a hay rack ride to the site. Quinn Evans Architects will present the final Master Plan at the Grand Falls Casino Resort, 1415 Grand Falls Blvd. in Larchwood from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Blood Run National Historic Landmark is located in Lyon County and encompasses a culturally significant landscape, providing links to the people and traditions associated with the past use of the site. This area between the Big Sioux River and Blood Run Creek is the largest known and most complex site of the Oneota tradition, which was practiced here by the Omaha/Ponca, Ioway and Otoe Tribes from about A.D. 1500 until shortly before 1714. The area will eventually be part of a bi-state park shared between South Dakota and Iowa.

“We are excited to have the public see the site and the final plan for it,” says Todd Coffelt, DNR State Parks Bureau Chief. “It has been a huge collaborative effort between a lot of folks and we are anxious to implement the resulting plan.”
