Contracts Abound on Environmental Commission's Meeting in Moravia

MORAVIA – Contracts for air, land and water quality dominate the June 21 agenda for the Environmental Protection Commission’s meeting at Honey Creek State Park Resort, 12633 Resort Drive in Moravia. 

Advance registration is required for two tours on June 20 preceding the business meeting. Following an 11:30 a.m. lunch at the Honey Creek State Park Resort Restaurant, a tour of the Rathbun Lake Watershed and Drinking Water facility begins at 1 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., those registered will have dinner on the lake with the Army Corps of Engineers.

On Tuesday, commissioners will meet for breakfast at 7:30 in the resort’s restaurant, followed by a tour of the Rathbun Fish Hatchery at 8 a.m. Reservations for the hatchery tour are not required. 

Commissioners will be asked to approve contracts at the 10 a.m. business meeting in the resort’s conference center. The meeting is open to the public and public participation is scheduled after the monthly reports. Or, people may submit written comments to the commission by mail or email to Jerah Sheets, Jerah.Sheets@dnr.iowa.gov before the meeting.

DNR is asking for two rule proposals to go forward: 
Updating solid waste rules to be consistent with current laws and eliminate duplicate reporting requirements 
Flood plain management rule amendments which will ease the construction of bridges, road embankments and culverts while protecting public safety.

The commission has two appointments to discuss referrals to the Attorney General:

  • At 1 p.m., a referral of the city of Sioux City for violations of its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit
  • At 1:30 p.m., a referral of Sedore, Inc., and Troy and Emily Sedore for solid waste and air quality violations.
