DES MOINES – The DNR Derelict Building Grant Program will award grants to 15 small, rural Iowa communities to help deconstruct or renovate abandoned structures, remove asbestos and limit construction and demolition materials going to the landfill.
The DNR Derelict Building Grant Program was instituted by statute to help rural communities with populations of 5,000 or less. Funding is awarded annually on a competitive basis with cash matches required. Applications for the next funding round will be due on Feb. 24, 2017.
The following projects will receive a total of $381,465.00 as reimbursement grants:
City of Eddyville — $1,500 to perform a structural engineering analysis on an abandoned commercial building marked for deconstruction.
City of Garner — $18,000 to complete deconstruction activities on an abandoned commercial building. Site will be marketed for commercial development.
City of Grundy Center — $87,400 to inspect for and abate asbestos and renovate an old building into a mixed use facility that features commercial and residential spaces.
City of Hartford — $800 to inspect for asbestos in an abandoned commercial building. The city reuse plan is to develop the property for the fire department.
City of Ida Grove — $72,000 to complete asbestos inspection, abatement and renovation of the old King Theater. The city plans to renovate the building and provide a multi-purpose theater focused on family entertainment.
City of LeGrand — $19,975 to complete asbestos abatement and deconstruction at an abandoned commercial building with plans to prepare the site for a new public library.
City of Lovilla — $20,000 to abate asbestos and deconstruction of an abandoned commercial building. The city plans to construct a new fire station.
City of McCausland — $10,490 to abate asbestos and renovate an abandoned bank building. The site will be renovated into a public meeting space and city hall.
City of Paulina— $25,000 to deconstruct an abandoned grain mill. The city plans to deconstruct the building and market the site for commercial development.
City of Preston— $4,500 to inspect for and abate an abandoned commercial building that will be targeted for renovation in the future.
City of Slater— $50,000 to abate asbestos and renovate an abandoned commercial building. The city plans to sell the building to an interested buyer who wishes to open a restaurant on Main Street.
City of Tabor — $2,500 to inspect for asbestos and perform a structural engineering analysis on an abandoned commercial building. The city plans to deconstruct building and build a new public library.
City of Vincent — $50,000 to deconstruct an abandoned school building. The city is planning on removing the building and subdividing the site into residential properties.
City of Wayland — $2,000 to inspect for asbestos. The city plans to sell the renovated building to local business interests.
City of Zearing — $17,300 to inspect and abate asbestos and perform a structural engineering analysis in an abandoned commercial building. The city is planning on removing the building and constructing a memorial park on the site.
