BURLINGTON – The city of Burlington stopped discharging untreated wastewater to the Mississippi River about 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The contractor suspended work Tuesday while waiting for parts to connect a new sanitary sewer. Wastewater discharges will resume Wednesday at the Cascade combined sewer outlet 002, until the connection is completed. The new sewer is part of a large project to separate combined storm water and sanitary sewers in Burlington.

The city estimates about 241,500 gallons discharged on Monday. They expect to discharge about 700 gallons per minute while the contractor is working Wednesday.

The DNR will monitor and review the project.
