DES MOINES—Three contracts to improve water quality are up for approval at the Nov. 19 meeting of the Iowa Environmental Protection Commission.

The business meeting begins at 10:30 a.m. in Room 116 of the Iowa State Capitol, 1007 E. Grand Avenue in Des Moines.

Contracts include finishing a demonstration project on the State Capitol grounds designed to capture storm water runoff and reduce sidewalk maintenance. Commissioners will be asked to approve three contracts for watershed management plans in Monroe, Wright and Johnson counties, following a competitive grant offering. Finally, a contract to support the award-winning Water Rocks! education program is up for approval.

In other action, commissioners will be asked to approve a recommendation to extend a program designed to collect and recover mercury-added switches from scrapped vehicles. Mercury-added switches are a concern because mercury is a neurotoxin and can affect kidney function.

At 11 a.m., commissioners will hear a Demand for a Hearing from Madison County on the Voss Cattle Company, LLC construction permit for a swine confinement building.

The meeting is open to the public. There is no scheduled public participation. Written comments may be submitted up to one day before the meeting to Jerah Sheets at Jerah.Sheets@dnr.iowa.gov or to DNR, 502 E. Ninth St., Des Moines, IA 50319.
