DNR conservation officers recover man’s body from Nishnabotna River

HAMBURG, Iowa -- On Monday, August 26, around 5:00p.m., law enforcement officials responded to the boat ramp at Goldenrod Access on the Nishnabotna River on reports of a possible drowning.

Officers found personal items located at the boat ramp of Thomas Gibson, 77, and believe the he was trying to launch his boat when it may have drifted away. Officials believe the Gibson voluntarily entered the water attempting to retrieve the boat when he drowned.

Gibson’s body was recovered around 10:00a.m. on Wednesday, August 28 and has been transported to the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner for an autopsy. The Iowa DNR was assisted by the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, the Southwest Iowa Dive Team, the Hamburg Fire Department, the Maryville, Missouri Police Department and the Missouri Highway Patrol.
