DES MOINES — Iowa students with the DNR’s 2018 Pollution Prevention Intern Program have recommended process and system improvements that could save Iowa companies more than $4 million annually.
This summer, 11 engineering students from Iowa State University and the University of Iowa worked with companies across the state to complete assessments and provide recommendations on improving water conservation, energy conservation, and waste reduction.
Companies have already begun to put some intern recommendations into practice, which are estimated to save:
- $1.6 million annually
- 45 million gallons of water
- 323,760 kWh
- 763,005 therms
- 17 tons solid waste
