The DNR has two openings at Banner Shooting Range near Indianola, and eight openings at Olofson Shooting Range near Polk City, for Range Safety Officers. Working under the general direction of the Chief Range Safety Officer/Range Manager and the Shooting Sports Coordinator, Range Safety Officers perform a variety of tasks ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the shooting ranges.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with range operations and ensuring safe operation of range by educating range users and enforcing safety rules,
- Registering shooters, collecting fees, providing instructions, monitoring the firing line for safety and answering questions from the public,
- Helping shooters with a variety of needs,
- Assisting Shooting Sports Coordinator, Chief Range Safety Officer/Range Manager and other Range Safety Officers with the maintenance of the physical property and administrative functions,
- Maintaining and repairing equipment needed to operate the range,
- Assisting with and conducting special events and programs as assigned, and
- Carrying out other duties as required.
Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of safe handling and use of firearms; ability to use PC-based software at a basic level; ability to operate cash register and reconcile daily and weekly financial reports; excellent organizational skills; excellent oral communication skills; ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, other DNR staff, state and federal agencies; ability to read and interpret rules and regulations; ability to gather, assemble, analyze facts, draw conclusions and develop solutions to organizational/program problems; capacity to adjust to change, work pressures or difficult situations without undue stress; ability to work independently; must demonstrate initiative, a customer service and team orientation and display high standards of ethical conduct; ability to become certified as a range safety officer, first aid, and CPR; position requires regular attendance as scheduled and occasionally on-call.

Starting Pay: $12.83 per hour
Hours: Variable, rotating schedule:
- Weekdays: 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Weekends: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Special Events/Programs: occasional evenings
- Limit of 779 hours per fiscal year
