HANLONTOWN – Magellan Pipeline Company reports more than 100 workers are on site Thursday working to clean up spilled diesel fuel after a leak reported Wednesday morning.
Located about three miles north and one mile east of Hanlontown, Iowa, in rural Worth County, the fuel is contained on less than two acres. Magellan hopes to recover the pooled fuel today. Once that’s completed, the company will excavate contaminated soil from the site.
Originally estimated at 63,000 gallons of diesel fuel, Magellan revised the estimate to 138,000 gallons Wednesday afternoon.
Iowa DNR staff onsite today and Wednesday report there is no indication that fuel has reached surface waters. The fuel is pooled on an acreage and farm field about one-third mile north of the intersection of 390th Street and Wheelerwood Road.
The cause of the pipeline rupture is unknown.
DNR will continue to monitor clean-up activities.
Worth County emergency officials, local responders from nearby counties, Magellan, Iowa DNR and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency responded to the spill.
