Crappie density at Lake Fisher is high and size quality is good. Fish up to 12 inches are fairly common. Bluegill size quality is poor with very few fish over 6 inches. This is largely due to the high abundance of gizzard shad which have a negative impact on the food web and reduce prey availability for bluegill and larval fish of all species. Largemouth bass density is relatively low and size quality is moderate. Most fish are 13- to 18-inches. Poor recruitment has resulted in very few largemouth less than 12 inches in the population. Gizzard shad and yellow bass abundance is very high which also negatively impact bluegill numbers and largemouth bass size.(2017)

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

The vast majority of Iowa’s streams, rivers and lakes offer safe and high-quality fish that pose little or no threat to human health if consumed. Some limitations may apply for young children and pregnant women. Here’s a Fish Consumption Fact Sheet from the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Dept. of Public Health for more information.
