The October 20 meeting of the State Preserves Advisory Board has been cancelled due to lack of a quorum resulting from last-minute absences by two members attending to family medical emergencies.

Denison man suffers self inflicted injury on his way to hunt deer

A Denison man suffered a self inflicted gunshot wound to his thigh from a pistol he was carrying in his waistband shortly after he began walking to the field to hunt deer with his muzzleloader.  The injury occurred around 5 p.m. on October 17, in southern Crawford County.

The Natural Resource Commission for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources approved two Resource Enhancement and Protection Public Private Cost-share grant requests from the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation at its October meeting. The projects were awarded more than $510,000.

The Natural Resource Commission of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources approved eight Resource Enhancement and Protection grants to County Conservation Boards during its October meeting. The grants totaled $1.29 million. There were 17 applications for the grants.

The Natural Resource Commission of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources approved Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) grants to 22 cities for use in parks and open spaces during its October meeting.  The projects were awarded nearly $2.4 million.  There were 53 applications for the grants.

He and his wife, Ellen, had spent the last three months working with a handful of young competitors, so when the speaker played a familiar “bob-white” call, Loren beamed. But as the teenagers’ faces turned blank and unsure, he realized that question wasn’t easy anymore—hunter or not, none of the youngsters had seen or heard a bobwhite quail.

Anglers who purchased the trout permit for the 2016 season may receive a postcard soon encouraging them to participate in the 2016 Trout Angler Survey. As of October 1, 2016, nearly 45,000 resident and non-resident anglers purchased the trout permit, and 10,000 of these purchasers were selected to participate in the trout survey.

Fort Dodge, Iowa - A nine month investigation into deer and turkey poaching in Webster County, Iowa, was closed on Oct. 7, when Kyle Alstott, 23, of Fort Dodge, the last of the 10 individuals facing charges from Iowa and Nebraska, pleaded guilty.

DES MOINES— The 2016 Water Year (ending September 30, 2016) brought a statewide average precipitation of almost 45 inches, 9.6 inches more than normal. This ranks as the third wettest water year among 144 years of record.

Storm Lake – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) responded to a bypass at the Tyson Fresh Meats pork plant on October 8, 2016.  The bypass occurred when a lift station pump failed and caused a power failure at two lift stations.

Seventeen locations across Iowa are gearing up to receive trout this fall.
