The DNR has updated various modeling guidance documents to incorporate the latest changes to federal modeling requirements.  The updates were reviewed with stakeholders at the May 25, 2017, AQ Client Contact meeting.  The guidance updates were also posted for a two week informal comment period that ended on June 7.  No comments were received so the documents were finalized as drafted.

TAMA COUNTY — A fish kill of more than 1,000 small black crappies at Casey Lake in Hickory Hills Park appears to be from natural spawning stress.

CHARLES CITY – Volunteers will have an opportunity this summer to spend their vacations cleaning up, learning about and exploring 55 miles of the upper Cedar River from the Iowa-Minnesota border to Nashua from July 10 to 14 as part of Project AWARE. Early registration ends June 16.

A dedication ceremony will be held at the Loess Hills State Forest Visitors’ Center this Thursday, June 8, 3-5 p.m. The center will be officially named the Brent S. Olson Memorial Visitor Center in recognition of Olson, forester for the area who died last December following a long battle with cancer.

On May 22, 2017 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that the revisions to air dispersion modeling requirements in Appendix W of 40 CFR Part 51 became effective.  The final rule includes several new or updated model options that help alleviate model over-prediction or allow for more appropriate source characterization.

On May 23, 2017, the Environmental Protection Commission set the Title V air emissions fee for the calendar year 2016 at $70.00 per ton.  As required by 567 Iowa Administrative Code (IAC) 30.4(2), the fee payment, along with one copy of Forms 1.0, 5.0, and a signed Part 3, must be submitted to the Department of Natural Resources - Air Quality Bureau no later than July 1, 2017.

Boaters, anglers, and paddlers are encouraged to use caution if planning to spend time on Iowa rivers or flood control reservoirs over the Memorial Day holiday. Heavy rainfall last weekend has brought many rivers to near flood stage and the force of the water will likely have moved around logs and other obstacles.

The Department of Natural Resources received grant funding from the Environmental Protection Agency for a diesel emission reduction program in Iowa.  The DNR has created a competitive application process to fund projects that will implement cost-effective strategies that result in diesel emission reductions statewide.
