Nicholas Slater of Glendale, Ariz. was found guilty following a trial on Feb. 12, 2018 for charges related to poaching a whitetail deer. The poaching incident occurred at Lake Manawa State Park in Council Bluffs on Nov. 19, 2016.

Eleven businesses will participate in DNR’s 2018 Pollution Prevention (P2) Intern Program. Upper-level college and university students work on-site at Iowa companies for 12- or 24-week paid internships to research solutions and implement pollution prevention strategies that will increase efficiency, reduce costs and help meet companies’ environmental goals.

Hunter Education Classroom courses are offered by knowledgeable and certified volunteer instructors and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers. Classroom courses are typically 12-15 hours in length and are held over 2 to 3 sessions (days). In order to receive certification, a student must attend all sessions and pass the final exam.

Manure applicator certification training for confinement site applicators is wrapping up, with the last live session scheduled Feb. 28. Confinement and commercial applicators who handle dry or solid manure can catch one of six training sessions offered Feb. 13 to Feb. 28.

It’s 10 o’clock on a summer night along a gravel road anywhere in Iowa. In the farm pond next to the road a raucous chorus of male frogs are making themselves heard as they vie for mates. A volunteer stands clipboard in hand, ear cocked, mentally sorting out each of the calling species which are using this seemingly ordinary pond.

DES MOINES – Permanent ice shelters must be removed from all state-owned lands and waters by Feb. 20. Ice shelter owners are encouraged not to wait until the last minute to get their shelter off the ice. If a shelter falls through the ice, the owner is responsible for getting it out of the lake.

BONDURANT – A family trout fishing event will be held at Lake Petocka, in Bondurant, at noon on Feb. 10. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will stock 1,400 rainbow trout in the lake. Previously scheduled for Jan. 27, the stocking was postponed due to unsafe ice conditions.

RUTHVEN - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is extending the muskrat trapping season on Trumbull Lake, Ventura Marsh, Burrows Pond and the Inlet Bay of Black Hawk Lake from Feb. 1 to April 1 to reduce the muskrat population and preserve the beneficial vegetation in the marsh.  This extension is only for muskrats on the identified areas.
