Iowa’s furbearer season opens Saturday and the outlook for trappers is positive – most species populations are steady, and there are some early indications wild fur pelt prices could be trending up this winter.

More than 200 athletes from 15 Iowa colleges and universities will participate in the 2022 Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Collegiate Championships in Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays and Super Sporting Clays. Many of these athletes have been shooting in the SCTP since middle school or high school and have been able to continue competing at the collegiate level.

Athletes from 117 teams across Iowa converged on the Iowa State Trapshooting Homegrounds, north of Cedar Falls, June 7-12 for the 2022 Scholastic Clay Target Program State Trap Shooting Championship. Nearly 3,000 athletes from 4th grade through high school competed in three different competitions; singles trap, doubles trap, and handicap trap.

Iowa’s 4 yr Collegiate Scholastic Clay Target Teams competed this past weekend in a four discipline competition: American trap, skeet, sporting clays, and super sporting. William Penn Shotgun Sports won the sporting clays and skeet team championships, while the Wartburg Knights won the trap and super sporting team championships.

DES MOINES - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering a program to teach skills needed to trap furbearers. The workshops feature several knowledge and skill building sessions teaching the basics of trapping in Iowa for those with little to no trapping experience.

Hunting seasons will begin closing soon, starting with pheasant, archery turkey and deer seasons, and late muzzleloader deer season on Jan. 10. The staggered goose seasons begin closing in the north zone first on Jan. 9, followed by the south zone on Jan. 16, and the Missouri River zone on Jan. 23.

GILMORE CITY, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is extending the muskrat trapping season on Lizard Lake, in Pocahontas County, from Feb. 1 to April 1 to offer additional trapping opportunities of a temporarily abundant resource. Iowa’s trapping season for all furbearers except beaver closes statewide on Jan. 31.

Cedar Falls – Iowa’s Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) state trapshooting championship event begins June 6 at the Iowa State Trapshooting Association home grounds just north of Cedar Falls.Middle school and elementary aged athletes will begin the competition on Wednesday with high school athletes competing Thursday through Sunday. Muskrat trapping season extended to April 1 on Trumbull Lake

RUTHVEN - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is extending the muskrat trapping season on Trumbull Lake, Ventura Marsh, Burrows Pond and the Inlet Bay of Black Hawk Lake from Feb. 1 to April 1 to reduce the muskrat population and preserve the beneficial vegetation in the marsh.  This extension is only for muskrats on the identified areas.
