DES MOINES, Iowa - The 2023 Iowa Archery in the Schools Program season culminated with the state tournament March 4-5 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, where nearly 1,800 archers competed for scholarships and awards in bullseye targets and 780 archers competed for scholarships and awards 3D targets.

An estimated 2,200 students from more than 125 schools from across Iowa will be in the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center (Bullseye) and the 4H Building (3D) at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines March 4-5, to participate in the 17th National Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament. This is the largest youth archery tournament in Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Fish Iowa! angler education program has partnered with the Recreational Fishing and Boating Foundation’s (RBFF) Vamos A Pescar™ program to provide funding to local 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations to support local efforts to educate and engage families in high-density Hispanic communities through programs, classes and fishing activities. Minimum grant request is $5,000 with a 1:1 cash match required.

More than 200 athletes from 15 Iowa colleges and universities will participate in the 2022 Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Collegiate Championships in Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays and Super Sporting Clays. Many of these athletes have been shooting in the SCTP since middle school or high school and have been able to continue competing at the collegiate level.

MAQUOKETA, IA -- Maquoketa Caves State Park will reopen for day use at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 28. The campground will remain closed until further notice. All campers with reservations through Sunday, July 31 have been notified and refunded.

Athletes from 117 teams across Iowa converged on the Iowa State Trapshooting Homegrounds, north of Cedar Falls, June 7-12 for the 2022 Scholastic Clay Target Program State Trap Shooting Championship. Nearly 3,000 athletes from 4th grade through high school competed in three different competitions; singles trap, doubles trap, and handicap trap.

Iowa’s 4 yr Collegiate Scholastic Clay Target Teams competed this past weekend in a four discipline competition: American trap, skeet, sporting clays, and super sporting. William Penn Shotgun Sports won the sporting clays and skeet team championships, while the Wartburg Knights won the trap and super sporting team championships.

Releasing fish due to size limits or for catch-and-release practices has anglers trying new methods to help severely hooked fish. Fish hooked in the gills have lower survival chances. Some anglers say pouring carbonated water or soda pop over hooked gills helps. They claim the carbon dioxide causes blood vessels to constrict or that phosphoric acid in beverages causes blood to clot. Let’s burst this bubble and see if it is fizz or fact.
