Iowa’s state shooting sports season is here, where thousands of student athletes from elementary to high school and colleges across the state compete in seven shooting sports championship events over the next several weeks, for the chance to earn scholarships, prizes and more.

Hunting seasons will begin closing soon in early January. Pheasant, archery turkey and deer seasons, and late muzzleloader deer season close on Jan. 10. Goose seasons start closing first in the north zone on Jan. 13, followed by the central zone on Jan. 20, and the south zone on Jan. 27.

More than 200 athletes from 15 Iowa colleges and universities will participate in the 2022 Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Collegiate Championships in Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays and Super Sporting Clays. Many of these athletes have been shooting in the SCTP since middle school or high school and have been able to continue competing at the collegiate level.

The snow goose migration is underway and with it, the opportunity for waterfowl hunters to participate in the special conservation order allowing hunting of light geese in Iowa through May 1.

Iowa’s 4 yr Collegiate Scholastic Clay Target Teams competed this past weekend in a four discipline competition: American trap, skeet, sporting clays, and super sporting. William Penn Shotgun Sports won the sporting clays and skeet team championships, while the Wartburg Knights won the trap and super sporting team championships.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will hold a public open house on August 18, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Cottonwood Loop shelter house of the Welter Recreation Area, to discuss a proposed forest wildlife stewardship plan at the Augusta Wildlife Management Area (WMA).

Athletes from 113 teams across Iowa converged on the Iowa State Trapshooting Home Grounds north of Cedar Falls for the 2021 Scholastic Clay Target Program State Trap Shooting Championship held June 8-13. More than 2,600 athletes from 4th grade through high school competed in three different competitions; singles trap, doubles trap, and handicap trap.

Over the next two weeks, more than 150 athletes from 15 Iowa colleges and universities will participate in the 2021 Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Collegiate Championships in Skeet, Sporting Clays and Trap. Many of these athletes have been shooting in the SCTP since middle school or high school and have been continued competing at the collegiate level.
