MONTROSE, IOWA -- At approximately 11:50 PM on November 13, 2021 a train collided with a barge that had been parked along the shore of the Mississippi River near Montrose in Lee County, Iowa. The southbound train operated by BNSF hit the stationary barge, derailing two locomotives and overturning several coal cars between the main line and side track. DES MOINES – The DNR Air Quality Bureau has the following draft permits up for review. The permits help protect Iowans’ health and the air where we live. DNR’s permitting staff review the applications to ensure facilities comply with state and federal air quality standards. The public has the right and is encouraged to comment on draft permits. Diesel Emission Reduction Grants Still Available

The Department of Natural Resources received grant funding from the Environmental Protection Agency for a diesel emission reduction program in Iowa.  The DNR has created a competitive application process to fund projects that will implement cost-effective strategies that result in diesel emission reductions statewide.

DES MOINES— The unusually warm and mostly dry June promoted the development of moderate drought conditions for parts of the state. However, Iowa continues to have abundant soil moisture reserves, high stream flow and a substantial groundwater supply thanks to a record wet 2015 fall.
