MARSHALLTOWN – Quarterly plans for water quality loans, solid waste grants and a contract for inventorying air emissions are on the Sept. 15 agenda for the Environmental Protection Commission’s business meeting in Marshalltown.
On Monday afternoon, Sept. 14, commissioners will tour the third largest pork processing plant in the United States. While the lunch and tour are open to the public, those planning to attend must pre-register by Sept. 10 with Jerah Sheets, DNR board administrator, at Jerah.Sheets@dnr.iowa.gov or by calling 515-313-8909. Sheets will provide the list to the company for security background checks.
Commissioners will also meet for dinner at 6 p.m. Monday at Mama DiGrado’s, 2500 S. Center St. in Marshalltown.
The regular meeting on Sept. 15 is open to the public, with an opportunity for public comment following monthly reports. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. at the Marshall County Conservation Board’s Grimes Farm and Conservation Center, 2349 233rd St. in Marshalltown. The public may submit written comments to the commission by mail or email to Sheets in advance of the meeting.
Commissioners will be asked to approve a contract for a data system to inventory air emissions. Several states use the system to collect air pollution data from regulated facilities. Businesses, DNR and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency expect data quality, readability and ease of data entry to improve upon approval.
Annual fees for water use permits are also on the agenda. The permits are required for any person or business using 25,000 gallons or more of water in one day. The proposed fee would be the same as in the 2015 state fiscal year.
Preceding the business meeting, Ed Tormey, DNR’s legal chief, will provide training for new commissioners on the referral process starting at 8:30 a.m. The training is open to the public.
