MANCHESTER – DNR staff were in the field Sunday and Monday looking for the source of a fish kill in Whitewater Creek in Dubuque County.

Environmental staff from the Manchester field office found manure runoff and dead fish along several miles of stream Sunday. Joined by fisheries staff on Monday, dead fish were found from southwest of Peosta downstream to the North Fork of the Maquoketa River in Jones County, a distance of more than 20 miles.

The investigation continues with potentially multiple sources of the pollutant. DNR collected water samples for further testing and will continue to count dead fish on Tuesday. A variety of fish species were found, including shiners, smallmouth bass, suckers and stonecat.
