STORM LAKE – A small amount of industrial cleaner at the Tyson-Hillshire plant reached a storm sewer that flows to Storm Lake after a pump failure.
The cleaner, which was mixed from powder, covered a 40-foot by 200-foot area and was supposed to go to the plant’s wastewater system. When the pump failed, the fluid flowed across the parking lot and into the storm sewer where an unknown amount reached the lake.
The outfall of the storm sewer is being monitored to determine how much of the cleaner may have reached the lake and if there could be any significant impact to water quality.
