SOLON—This morning, staff from the city of Solon in Johnson County reported a release of partially treated wastewater which flowed overland into Mill Creek.

City staff said the wastewater treatment plant was functioning on Monday during the work day. They estimate 100,000 to 120,000 gallons of partially treated sludge water reached the creek after a pump malfunctioned overnight.

DNR staff collected water samples from the creek for laboratory analysis. They did not see any signs of a fish kill in the creek. However, they recommend residents keep children and pets out of the creek for 24 to 48 hours or until laboratory results come in.

Park staff at Lake Macbride State Park think a temporary silt dam on Mill Creek will prevent any wastewater from entering the lake.

DNR staff will continue to monitor the creek and lake for possible environmental impacts. DNR will consider appropriate enforcement action.
