GRUNDY COUNTY, Iowa - DNR environmental specialists responded to a semi tractor trailer leaking diesel fuel after a crash on November 26 in Grundy County.

It happened on Highway 20 when an east bound semi tractor trailer lost control Tuesday morning, west of Dike.  The semi tractor trailer went down an embankment and across the North Fork of Black Hawk Creek. The semi tractor and the first of the two tandem trailers came to rest on the east side of the creek, with the second (rear) trailer coming to rest on the west bank of the creek. The trailers were empty but both saddle tanks were damaged and an estimated total of 100 gallons of diesel fuel was released.

A portion of the diesel fuel leaked into North Fork Black Hawk Creek, and a sheen was observed on the surface. The Dike Fire Department placed initial absorbent booms downstream of the incident and contained the fuel from moving farther downstream and an environmental contractor has since added more booms. No fish were killed from this leak.  An environmental contractor is handling the clean up of the contained diesel fuel and excavation of the contaminated soil.
