After 28 years with DNR, Ken Hessenius is seeking new adventures. Supervisor of the Spencer field office for the last 15 years, Hessenius retired Dec. 28, trading his sampling bottles for rod and reel, and time with family.

Raised on the family farm near Curlew, Hessenius learned to farm and love the land early on. He majored in Environmental Science and Biology, later receiving a Master’s degree in Vertebrate Biology.

His career in science education and conservation began in the early ‘80s teaching at community colleges and working with conservation agencies. His science and ag knowledge made him a good fit for the Spencer field office, which serves 16 counties in prime farmland.

In his good-bye letter, Hessenius applauded staff saying, “Thanks to you…I sincerely believe we have made significant strides in environmental protection… We have a tough job to do. You are all up to the task.” In typical Hessenius’ fashion, he announced he would not miss Friday afternoon calls demanding immediate attention.

Good luck Ken in your new endeavors.
