USA Today recently revealed their 2017 Readers’ Choice for Best Iowa Attractions, and the winner is . . . Maquoketa Caves State Park!
More than 150,000 visitors are drawn to Maquoketa Caves each year for its unique system of caves. Located in Jackson County, the state park has 13 caves to explore, more than any other Iowa state park.
Online voting took place through the month of August with the results announced on Sept. 1. Two state parks were in the 10Best running. Pikes Peak State Park, along the Mississippi River in northeast Iowa’s Clayton County, finished seventh in the contest.
“We are thrilled with this recognition for both these state parks,” says Todd Coffelt, DNR State Parks bureau chief. “We hope people will make plans to visit them as well as others this fall – which is a particularly beautiful time to explore these natural areas.”
