Amenities

Amenities at Pool 11, Mississippi River include:
Ice fishing on backwaters is in full swing on the Upper Mississippi River Pool 9-11. Freezing temps have ice building in backwater lakes. There is now 2-3 inches of snow cover over the ice. Warmer temperatures over the holiday weekend may weaken the ice. Avoid areas with current. Anglers should use a spud bar to test the ice prior to venturing onto the ice.
Water level the tailwaters in Guttenberg is 6 ft. and expected to be stable. Ice is around 6-7 inches in protected backwaters. Ice is forming at the boat ramps in Guttenberg and ice flows are collecting below the dam so tailwater fishing access may be limited. Avoid ice in areas with any current yet. Avoid the mouth of the creek at Mud Lake.
Bluegill - Good: Good sized bluegills being caught in the early bite
Largemouth Bass - Fair: Anglers catching some nice bass fishing waxworms for panfish.

Walleye - Slow: Walleye fishing in the tailwaters has been good recently but access may be limited by ice.
Yellow Perch - Good: Some good reports of perch catches at Mud and Sunfish Lakes
Black Crappie - Fair: Nice sized crappie being caught. Try using small minnows for larger fish.
Northern Pike - Fair: Early tip up fishing has been good at times

Iowa-Caught Fish Are Safe to Eat, In Almost All Cases

The vast majority of Iowa’s streams, rivers and lakes offer safe and high-quality fish that pose little or no threat to human health if consumed. Some limitations may apply for young children and pregnant women. Here’s a Fish Consumption Fact Sheet from the Iowa DNR and the Iowa Dept. of Public Health for more information.
