As spectacular as fireworks can be, the fine particles in smoke from fireworks can cause breathing problems for some if the air is stagnant. During these conditions, fine particles can be trapped near the ground and build to unhealthful levels. An air pollution monitor in Davenport recorded unhealthful levels of fine particles after Fourth of July fireworks in 2008.

SOLON - A blue green algae bloom is to blame for a fish kill in south arm of Lake Macbride. Runoff from a storm on May 29 combined with an increase in water temperature stimulated a blue green algae bloom in the south arm of the lake, east of the causeway near the south campground. The Department is requesting public and stakeholder input on a proposed administrative rulemaking to amend state rules implementing the Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) program for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) to match federal amendments that EPA finalized over a phased-in three year period, including new EPA stack methods for PM2.5. In particular, the Department requests stakeholder responses to questions on the potential impact on jobs in the state and requests input on the draft Jobs Impact Statement (JIS). At this time, the Department cannot determine the jobs impact from the federal regulations because the Department does not have adequate EPA analyses or Iowa-specific data on potential jobs impacts.

Title V Fee Due July 1, 2011

EPA originally announced the proposals March 16, 2011. The publication in the Federal Register begins the 60-day public comment period on the rule, which closes on July 5, 2011.
